Installing Python 3 and IDLE
- Mac:
- Download Python
3.11 for Mac to your desktop, double-click on the package file, and
accept the installation defaults. This will install both Python and IDLE.
To start IDLE, click on Applications → Python 3.11 → IDLE.
- Delete the installer file from your desktop, since it is no longer needed.
- Optional but recommended: Open your Applications folder in Finder
by clicking on the Go menu at the top of the screen and choosing
Applications. Then open the Python 3.11 folder and drag the IDLE icon to
your Dock. This will make it easier to start up Python by just
double-clicking on the Dock icon.
- Windows:
- Download Python
3.11 for Windows to your desktop, double-click on the installer file, and accept the
installation defaults. This will install both Python and IDLE. To start
IDLE, open the Python 3.11 application from the Start menu and choose IDLE.
- Delete the installer file from your desktop, since it is no longer needed.
- Optional but recommended: Create a shortcut on your desktop to the IDLE
application. This will make it easier to start up Python by just clicking on
the shortcut.
- Linux:
- Python 3 is probably already installed. Type python3 at
the command prompt to check.
- If you don't have it, you can get
it here.
Untar the archive and follow the instructions in the README file. However,
there may be an easier way to install Python 3, depending on the type
of Linux you're running, so ask me about it first.
